The Purposeful Engine

Got Purpose - Start

As we reflect on the year that is passing and looking forward to the year upon us it is a great time to evaluate what we would like to be doing with our lives.  The first step in doing so is understanding who we are and what our purpose is.

I like to think of purpose as the engine in a car. It is the heart and soul of everything we do. If purpose is clear it has the power to take us great distances and see great things.

Lack of purpose is like a car with a broken engine. In our youth, we dreamed of great things…we had purpose and our engine was running. Lack of attention, thought, and focus wear down the engine into omission. We get comfortable in our surroundings and decide to make camp. The engine stalls and eventually gives out.

What type of engine (or purpose) do you have? Is it a high functioning, powerful machine that is taking you places? Is it maintained regularly? Or, through neglect, does it stall and keep you from moving forward?

Purpose is the foundation of everything we do. Clarity in who we are, what we want, and where we are going provides the required motivation to accomplish great things. The fulfillment of our identified purpose is what will empower personal, family, and organizational greatness. Greatness is not measured by media, society or any other external group or organization. It is measured and previously defined by the individuals or groups carrying out their defined purpose.

If we, or some group or organization to which we belong, are feeling stuck, frustrated, and empty it may be time to reevaluate who we are and what we sincerely want. It has been my experience that this discovery process can be challenging but also full of excitement, hope, and light.

Do some self-evaluation this week and see what type of engine you have. Determine if you really know where you are going and what you want. Are you satisfied with your current employment or do you want something more? Are you happy with your home life or does something need to change?  Many people want to change but just don’t know how. The next couple of posts that I write will successfully guide and steer the reader towards a more fulfilling life; a life they can feel great about.
