Christmas, Geese and Golden Eggs

There was once a Countryman who possessed the most wonderful Goose you can imagine, for every day when he visited the nest, the Goose had laid a beautiful, glittering, golden egg.

The Countryman took the eggs to market and soon began to get rich. But it was not long before he grew impatient with the Goose because she gave him only a single golden egg a day. He was not getting rich fast enough.

Then one day, after he had finished counting his money, the idea came to him that he could get all the golden eggs at once by killing the Goose and cutting it open. But when the deed was done, not a single golden egg did he find, and his precious Goose was dead.

Moral:  Those who have plenty want more and so lose all they have.”

During this season of golden eggs that appear under the Christmas tree we often lose sight of the real authentic gold in our lives; fulfillment, connection and friendship.  Children, much more innocent in their Christmas gift desires, think gifts and candy are what make real gold (or happiness). If this value system continues into adulthood they run the risk of losing all they have in pursuit of more empty golden eggs (thus killing the golden goose).  In other words, the singular focus of material acquisition runs the risk of losing family, friends, and community (all of which provide the real currency of happiness and joy).  During this season let’s take time to remind our little ones the reason for the season, the value of relationships over toys, and what must be done to continue to receive real golden eggs in our lives.

Let us all reach out to loved ones wherever they may be and nurture these relationships that provide the currency of genuine happiness.  We must always remember, value, and nurture the source from whence our happiness comes.

Have a Very Merry Christmas!
